Divertimento

Just as Vieuxtemps, his teacher , who said «runs ?… I never wrote any», Ysaÿe never wrote any runs, or at least, what is generally meant by that term, it is : lot of notes, fast and difficult to play, running up and down the instrument, and for the sole and only pleasure of the amateurs for gymnastic and virtuosity...

There is between that sort of exhibition and the music, the same difference that one finds between gymnastic (even of the highest level) and choregraphy…even if some times, the difference could seem very smal… even if the one and the other can mutually get richer from each other…Their goals are totally opposed.

In this divertimento, true, the virtuosity holds an important place, but always at the service of the music and of the expression.

There is that orchestra there, and that violin which amuses himself to suddenly emerge from it, to suddenly plonge in it again, to play with it such a games as played by the dolphins, jumping in and out of the Ocean, making capers, playing with the wave, and for the only and simple pleasure of doing it…
